(MEXICO CITY) – On Monday, the Mexican government provided an update to it’s potential GMO corn ban by issuing a new decree. According to the report from Reuters, Mexico will allow imports of GMO corn for animal feed and industrial uses. However, the country will prohibit GMO corn for human consumption and a ban on the herbicide glyphosate.
Under the new decree, the measures go into affect on Tuesday. U.S. ag trade chief Doug McKalip had given Mexico until February 14th to clarify and explain the science behind it’s decree. The U.S. has said they would take action under the USMCA against Mexico if it was needed. As of Tuesday morning at 7am CST, we were awaiting response from U.S. officials and ag groups in the U.S. to the latest Mexican decree.
