(WASHINGTON D.C.) — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) by the Senate, a key position overseeing the nation’s health policies.

His confirmation marks a significant moment for both public health and the agriculture industry. The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) extended its congratulations, expressing optimism about working with Kennedy and his leadership team. The IFPA emphasized that expanding access to fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables is essential in combating diet-related diseases, which place a heavy burden on the U.S. healthcare system. “With diet-related diseases placing immense strain on our healthcare system, ensuring greater access to fresh fruits and vegetables must be a top national priority,” said IFPA CEO Cathy Burns. The organization is eager to collaborate with HHS and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on improving food labeling transparency, integrating produce into healthcare, and expanding financial incentives to encourage healthier eating habits.

Similarly, the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) congratulated Kennedy on his confirmation, expressing a desire to collaborate on advancing the health of Americans by promoting the consumption of dairy products. Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of IDFA, noted that dairy products are essential sources of key nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D, and protein, which contribute to a balanced diet. Dykes also emphasized the need for more flexible and innovative regulations to support the dairy industry and ensure Americans have access to safe, nutritious, and affordable dairy products. “For too long, inflexible, burdensome regulations have stifled innovation and production efficiencies for dairy processors while outdated nutrition policies have discouraged Americans from consuming milk, yogurt, cheese, and other wholesome dairy products,” Dykes said.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) congratulated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his confirmation as well on Thursday. “We look forward to working with HHS and the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine to build upon the yearslong effort to modernize U.S. animal food regulations so that they keep pace with advancing animal nutrition science and put the U.S. animal food industry on a level playing field with its global counterparts,” according to a statement from AFIA’s President and CEO Constance Cullman. “Our goal is that the U.S. animal food regulatory system encourages innovators to invest in and deliver innovative ingredients to the market in a timely way and that American farmers, ranchers and pet owners maintain confidence in the safety of the U.S. food supply. We urge Kennedy to keep science, not evolving public opinion, at the heart of his decision-making so that together, we can meet our country’s food safety and security goals.”

As Secretary of HHS, Kennedy will have the opportunity to address both chronic disease prevention and food-related public health challenges. His leadership is expected to be closely watched as he navigates the complexities of public health policy and works to enhance access to nutritious foods, a critical element in improving health outcomes across the nation.
